There are many ways to use a yoga mat…

I can lead when necessary, like every time I get roped into to being the jury duty foreman, but I prefer to be a follower.

So when my significant other of 17 years (Doc B) gets into things, I tend to follow. Gardening, fly fishing, jogging, therapy, you name it, I’ve tried it. Doc B took an introductory meditation class during our honeymoon in 2001 so I pretty much knew what I was in for.

About six years ago, Doc B began a dedicated Mysore Ashtanga yoga practice. I’d done some yoga, but didn’t really have an interest in making it my sole form of exercise. I was set in my ways when it came to working out. This chunky kapha needed to sweat it out at the gym every morning at 5:30 am – not go to some mamby pamby yoga class that started a full half hour later. But then at a yoga party (yes, they have those), while I was drinking (yes, some yogis drink), I mentioned to one of the yoga teachers that I could always tell when Doc B hadn’t been to a yoga class in a few days, like an attitude adjustment was needed and yoga was the only thing that would fix it.

Well, when Doc B finally talked me into trying a Mysore class, that same teacher told me she knew I’d eventually show up. She knew I’d realize that yoga could make a difference in one’s demeanor and that I’d figure that out (sooner or later – my words). Now, three years later, I’m still showing up. I’m also sweating my ass off (this ain’t no mamby pamby yoga!)…and I’m trying not to tip over.  Now if I could only sweat off my beer belly too.

    • Many thanks for the kind words Allison! One can never get enough sunshine, well, unless you forget to put on your SPF 200 🙂 By the way, I like turtles too and even have a tattoo of one.
